Most laptops have a power management feature built in. It's really up to you to decide just what kind of performances level you want from your laptop, hence the power setting. If you go for max performance, then your battery drain with be maximum.( less battery time per that charge.) I recommend that you go over the power setting for the battery and decide what performances level you really need.
Highest level of performances is the quickest drain on the battery. A balance level of performances/battery will give you decent combination of good performances and battery life usage. The power saver will cut back on battery drain where-ever possible and, thus extend your charge in the battery to a maximum time.
With all due respect, you should always disconnect your AC charger from the laptop when the battery is fully charged. Then, after you've drained the battery down to about the 10% level, reconnect the AC charger and, recharge the battery. If you find that you must use the AC charger frequently to run the laptop, do your battery a favor, and safely removed it from the puter case after it's been fully charge. Just try to use the battery properly and, you should expect to get a more normal life of use from it.
Hope this helped

It really depends on what you are doing, I would expect that kind of life from playing a game, playing music loud or installing something. But on stand by it should be 2-3 hours. If your laptop is second hand it could be the cells are dying in the battery. So thats why you don't get much battery life.

Since i didnt know specifically what applications and kinda laptop you are running. There may be several possibilities:
1) It may your battery lifespan is gona due.
2) If you are running heavy application like playing high-end
games or running other application that takes a lot of memory
and processing your battery gona empty faster
3) If you are using 4 cell battery laptop it will not last long more
than 2 hours.

What Laptop is this?
Gateway for example, you may need to recalibrate the battery and it may help.
If your notebook unexpectedly goes into Sleep mode while
you are using it but the battery charge is not low, you may
need to recalibrate your battery. You should also recalibrate
the battery periodically to maintain the accuracy of the
battery gauges.
To recalibrate the battery:
1 Connect the AC adapter, then turn on your notebook.
2 As soon as it starts and you see a startup screen, press
F2. The BIOS Setup utility opens.
3 Open the Advanced menu.
4 Highlight Battery Auto Learning, then select Enabled
by pressing the spacebar.
5 Open the Exit menu, highlight Exit Saving Changes,
then press ENTER.
6 Select Yes, then press ENTER.
The battery recalibration process begins and a screen
opens showing you the progress. The entire process
takes several hours.
When the recalibration has finished, the message “Press
[Esc] key to exit” appears.
7 Press ESC. The battery charge indicator now displays an
accurate battery charge.

Do you charge it to fully charged and use it plugged in when you can? Running the battery down and not getting it to max power again really drains any battery. Keep it charged when you can and if it keeps up look into a new battery or get your laptop checked out by a tech person for abnormalities.

Maybe an old battery and needs a new one. Only charge re-chargeable batteries when the battery runs down, not all the time or to "top it off"..when you top it off it only remembers that much energy in the top off for the whole amount of energy in the battery. So it shortens the life of the battery.

u probably have to get a new battery, That same thing happened to me and once I got a new battery it worked! Did u leave it unplugged to the point where it was flashing red? If so that could have caused the battery problem...
