I am making a little deck of home-made playing cards out of card-stock and photographs. I want the cards to be durable and somewhat water resistant. The cards are small (2.5" x 2.5"), and I think getting them laminated would cost a fortune and be a pain to cut neatly. Do I have any other options? Would painting Modge Podge on to both sides of the card make for durable cards, too? Are there any other ideas?

I find Modge Podge to be a bit tacky, even when dry. I suggest spraying them with high-gloss polyurethane.

Hmmm, without the expense of laminating? Well, you have some great answers already but and they will be stiffer however, we make cards and then "laminate" them with clear contac paper that you get at WalMart. It is only a few dollars for a roll and will go much faster than the Modge Podge.

Hope this helps! At least it will give you a faster finished product option. Good Luck!

Buy the cheap laminating paper that you would use to cover like a school book (sorry that is how we used to use it). I bought some to laminate some postcards, and I layed a sheet down sticky side up, positioned my cards, and put another piece on sticky side down. Smoothed out the bubbles, cut them out leaving like a 1/4 inch border, and I was all set. Its the kind that comes in a roll, they have it wal-mart, and even the grocery store. I've found modge podge makes things not as durable as you'd like.

Mod Podge would probably ripple the paper and maybe even cause the ink to run. You could try a finishing spray. Or maybe go to Kinko's and see if they have a good cardstock that would be stronger. Since the cards are so small, they could get quite a few on a sheet.

They actually make really inexpensive laminate paper. They are in a package of 10 sheets the size of regular paper for like 5 dollars. Its also really easy to apply. You can get them at any office supply store. You could also use packaging tape too.

Mod Podge sounds good to me. Great idea.
You could always try 1 or 2 cards and see if it's up to your expectations.

You might consider making them a bit smaller and then you could cover them with clear shipping tape. It's only a few dollars for a 2" wide roll.
