Were it not for spotty dick (aka Nigel) only the purest of classical music lovers would have ever heard of this rather boring, repetitive composer. For something a bit more variable, try - say - Khachaturian (Piano Concerto is superb) or Prokofiev (various spellings available!) whose music is quite well known already, viz Romeo & Juliet and Peter and the Wolf ! ! !

I personally adore Vivaldi, and I love his life story -- he taught at a girls' school for abandoned and orphaned children and wrote many (some would say most) of his compositions for them to play or sing; he was a Venetian priest with such brilliant red hair that he was known as the "red priest".

I, too, love the "Gloria", like an earlier answerer, but I will forever have a special place in my heart for his violin concerto in A minor; it's beloved by Suzuki violin students all over the world, and though I last played it the summer before I started fifth grade, I have no doubt whatsoever that I could pick it up now (I'm 33) and remember every note. A remarkable piece.

I am not a huge fan of Vivaldi and it is kinda ridiculous that 4 or 5 people said the same thing....he wrote a whole lot more than the Four Seasons....
My favorites would be:
Concerto in Bm for 4 Violins and Orchestra
Concerto in Gm for 2 Cellos and Orchestra
Sonatas 1-6 (esp. 3) for Cello

Vivaldi seems to be like football and buttermilk.
Everyone either loves him or hates him.
Put me down for the former category.
I have sometimes considered organizing a local chamber group which would play nothing but Vivaldi.

Poor Vivaldi...you know he did write other things besides the Four Seasons? I just hope that people are saying that it is their favorite because they really like it the best and not because it is the only piece by Vivaldi that they know! ;)

Although I like many of his works...i can only choose one! The Vivaldi "Gloria" RV 589 (not to be confused with 588 or 590 - his other two gloria settings)

I enjoy Vivaldi's music very much--most of it is bright and cheerful, and you can really get a strong sense the warm Italian sun in his music.

I'm particularly fond of his "Concerti da Camera" ("Chamber Concerti"), which are written for relatively small groups of instrumental. My current favorite is the Concerto RV 94, for Recorder, Oboe, Violin, Bassoon and Continuo.

I just love him, and not only because he was from Venice, like part of my family.
What I love in his music, it's the way he puts together joy that’s for what I would call “the surface”) and angst (in the depth, in the background).
Among my favourite compositions, there’s of course the “Stabat Mater” and the “Nisi Dominus”. I also like his opera “Montezuma” (it’s a “pasticcio”; he rearranged for it several former compositions; the arie “Gl’oltraggi della sorte”, “L’aquila generosa” and “L’agonie nell’alma afflicta” are simply beautiful). I could tell how many concerti I like… And there’s also an aria from his cantata “Gloria e Imeneo”: “Tenero fanciulletto”.

He's not my favourite composer but he's one of the few geniuses in music history. His four seasons are conisdered a timeless classic and his "spring" can be easily recognized by millions world wide.
