Who says American's can't own monkeys as pets? Organ grinders for years have had monkeys as pets. the little fellow would sit on the organ grinder's shoulder dressed with a red fezz hat and a jacket he would hop off and collect coins thrown on the ground for the playing by those that appreciated him. Also people would give the monkey crackers sometimes.
Also Michael Jackson has a chimpanzy called bubles I think.

Non-human primates would make terrible pets. They are intelligent, extremely dirty, can carry deadly diseases that are communicable to humans (researchers have been killed by inadvertently getting rhesus macaque urine in the eye) and no human could provide enough mental stimulation for them not to develop some sort of destructive behavior to compensate. Also, many people get pets without knowing anything about them. If you get a cat, at the very least you know to feed it and give it attention. If nothing else is provided, chances are the cat can still live a relatively normal life. Monkeys need much much more than that, and the average person is not going to know that. If monkeys were allowed as pets, untold numbers of them would be neglected. Not out of intentional cruelty, but because of lack of knowledge. Anyway, that's just my take on things. I'm glad they can't be held as pets. The only people handling these animals in captivity should be trained professionals.

That's why... the fact that most people think they would be good pets. Monkies are incredibly strong, intelligent, willful, destructive, dirty, and make terrible pets. People who try to keep monkies end up over their heads very quickly. Monkies belong in the wild, not in your house as a pet.

Short answer: they can carry dangerous viruses into the U.S.
Read the book "The Hot Zone". It is about how a whole warehouse full of monkeys had to be euthanized because they were found to be infected with a strain of Ebola virus. It is very deadly and very contagious.
Sorry. We have a little black bunny rabbit we just love. Try it.

It isn't that you can't but you do have to have a special permit to own one.
When I was a kid (I'm 51) my Dad bought a monkey. After a few days my Mom gave him a choice - us or the monkey!
They are curious. He would pick up a glass object, examine it and drop it on the floor. Forget putting it back where it went. He would poo where he wanted, and climb to the highest spot and challenge us to reach him.
Us kids where glad the thing was gone. We much preferred dogs and cats.

American Bulldogs are stunning pets in case you have the time for them. they are obdurate and annoying headed yet very loving and unswerving and consistently wanting to delight. I fairly have 3 and that they are the desirable canine i've got ever owned in my existence and that they are large with young toddlers, canine, cats, and stunning at retaining the residing house.

When I was up in New York my neighbor had a pet monkey. It just depends on where you live in the US i guess.
