I can't give you a number but it is large and ever increasing. The poverty leads to disease and illness and ultimately death. There are many parts of Africa, as well as other countries who are in the same situation. Put them altogether of the ones we know about and I would guess it would be millions. It's so sad but we have it here in the USA here too and that is so wrong.

I think you hit the nail on the head with all of your possibilities. Corruption, AIDS, unemployment, lack of social services, head of household gone. Also lack of infrastructure. Historically, Africa was made up of tribal people. In most areas, they were colonized by Europeans and were forced to give up their old ways which used to work in the individual climates. Nomadic tribes were eventually forced to live within the man-made boundaries of countries. This meant that even in the drier areas, the land was required to sustain a population for long periods of time. It couldn't do that. Colonization also meant that the historically successful ways of living (customs)were stopped, because they were "backwards, uncivilized people" who had to be "taught". Well, that's obviously not true because Africans had survived without "civilized" help for millenia. So now family structures were broken up. When the colonies reverted by to home rule, I don't believe that most countries were ready for it and corruption set in. Now, AIDS is decimating the populations of some areas. Old beliefs that circumcision is a bad thing helps spread the disease as does "the oldest profession" and rapes that occur to intimidate people. It is possible to end the social and infrastructure problems in most places. The dictators who have mansions and personal jets could support improvements to their country with wells, schools, microloans (to start with), electricity, and medical people and goods. Think they will? I wish.

What are you using as a definition of poverty? How about not having access to food, clean water, clothing, shelter, education and medical care? Below is a source that helps to define poverty.

Why do you care? The world is over populated. God and/or the natural cycle of the planet (whichever you want to believe in) has to practice population control. We live longer and have more medicine than ever before. It has to even out somewhere.

Too many I'm afraid.......but not as many as people who die from heart related diseases due to overeating in the West.

I don't know, but possible a lot of people. There are no hope for them unless they just grow their own crops with imported water.

Poverty never killed anyone. Sickness, malnutrition and war will though.
