the Ivy league congerence, followed by The Big Ten, then; sec, big 12, pac 10, and big east.
this is the most comprehensive list of all past national championships and the voting organizations that hand out awards: http://www.ncaa.org/champadmin/ia_football_past_champs.html
this site is a NCAA site, NOT some stupid trickipedia site..
Ohio State doesn't claim all of these awards, most noteworthy of all is the partial national championship given john cooper's 98 team.
anyway, if yous take the time to tally the individual titles and use the current conference alignment, then yous will find that my original answer is correct, and the ivy league won so damn many titles that The Big Ten is a distant second, and the sec is about 6 behind The Big Ten, and then the rest...

1927 - Yale Claimed National Title
Yale won its record 18th national championship. However, 1927 is the last time the Bulldogs were crowned National Champions.
1922 - Princeton Grabbed Title
Ivy League power Princeton claimed its 17th National Championship. However, it was the last title for the New-Jersey based school. Currently, Princeton is second with 17 National Football Championships.

I'd guess the SEC, but I'm not sure about that. I know these teams have all won championships: Alabama-12 Tennessee-I'm not sure, at least 3 I think Florida-2 LSU-3 Ole Miss-3 Georgia-at least 2 I'm not sure about any of the other teams. All of the ones I've listed have won at least 2 championships as well. I'll check and see if I'm right. I checked and this is a hard question to answer. Since most teams have changed conferences before, you run into a lot of problems. Also, college football was a sport only found at elite Northern schools for a number of years, so that limited where the champions could come from. All-time, the Ivy League has won the most, although nearly all of those came before 1900, so it's debatable if those really count, considering the Ivy League isn't 1-A anymore.
