year and a half! I came in on a special of $1,000 a month,the first year after at renewal they raised it $100 a month then they now they want me to sighn again raising it another $120 dollars a month. Is there a law to protects me from this?
I live in Missouri

Unless you're in a city with Rent Control, like Santa Monica, Calif, then they can charge you anything they want as long as they give you at least a 30 days written notice that your rent is going up.

They are only allowed to raise your rent after your lease is over. So you were there one year and they raised it the $100 they can not raise it again until that year lease is over. Once that year is over they then can increase it the next $120. I do not know where you live in Missouri but I live by Joplin. There are houses that you can rent cheaper than that. Just thought I let you know.

You would have to check with the state on their policies regarding any laws with rentals, but I doubt you would have a case. I live in VA, in an apartment, and our rent goes up every year also, but not as high as yours. Ours is more like around $50 a year. Usually though, states will say that landlords have the right to raise their rent as much as they want, as long as the leasee signs the agreement to acknowledge the increase.

Only the law of common sense. They are letting you choose to either pay the higher amount or move. Once you sign the contract/rental agreement, you have the amount of time signed for to decide if you can take another increase next time.

in the original contract you signed there has to be something that says you can be subjected to rising costs.
since i dont have a copy of your contract, look over it, and contact a lawyer, dont sign the cost rais until you have, or you will have to pay the extra 120, even if you are protected, so dont sign the new contract.
