Try coin collecting. It doesn't have to cost you a lot. You can go to the bank and pick of a box of coin (whichever denomination you like) for exactly face value. A box of pennies is $25, a box of nickels is $100, a box of dimes is $250 and boxes of quarters or half dollars are $500. You don't have to buy the whole box. The bank can pull out whatever amount you like.
Once you get a box, you can go through and pull out the better coins (there are books to help with this or websites). You can pick up a coin album and try to fill all the holes (get one for each year) or just search for interesting ones.
The coins that you don't want can be returned to the bank and put straight back into your account (though it's often better to return the coins to a different bank (not just a different branch but a different bank) so that you don't search the same coins over and over). Everything you find will have been obtained at face value. You'd be surprised what people have found. Check out these links to see:

Also check your change for interesting finds.
Some things to search for: wheat pennies, silver dimes, silver quarters, old coins, error coins, coins with the "S" mintmark - it could be a proof coin etc. There's always the chance that you could find a real treasure!
It's also helpful to buy a red book. It can help you price your coins and will answer many of the questions you may have.
OR IF THAT'S NOT FOR YOU...

Coming from an avid Beanie baby collector, yes, they are collectible, but they hold no value. Up until several years ago, they were highly valued, but not any more, due to mass production and ease of availability.
If you want to collect something that might be high in value, I would recommend something like Precious Moments if you like figurines, or even guns. My husband collects guns, and if you do your research, you can get great deals on guns, even for the highly valued ones (yes, guns can be collectibles), although that hobby in itself is pretty pricey.
Something else you could collect could be smashed pennies. I work in a museum, and we have several penny smashing machines that are very popular. Collecting smashed coins has a high following for a hobby that doesn't cost much more than $1 per smashed penny at a machine. Just look the info up online. There are some great designs out there!

Collect what you love and can afford.
Sure, we've all seen the programs where someone has a lifetime collection of Item Of The Moment that turns out to be worth a fortune. It happens.
It also doesn't happen. Find something you love and are interested in. Learn as much as you can about it. The more you know, the more likely you are to make selections that will hold their value. If you love what you collect and only buy what you can afford, your enjoyment won't be marred by an item losing value.
Beanie Babies aren't as valuable as they once were, but are certainly still collectible.
Collections in my own family are dolls, snowglobes, D&D Miniatures, Haviland china, and steins. Other people I know collect airline memorabilia, annual edition holiday ornaments, decorative plates, and owl figurines. None of them care about the retained value, because they all get pleasure from the individual items.

i myself collect snowglobes!! they're pretty unique and not alot of ppl collect them so its diffrent. not all of them are expensive. but u can get some that have crystal, gold lining, music, and lights. one time i had one that had two crystal swans with gold necks and music and a light. and u dont have to just get them at christmas time either. there are so many kinds. like if u go somewhere, too. like panama city beach, or paris. instead of a t-shirt i get snowglobes. like the beach one was in the shape of a consh shell with beads and little shells instead of "snow" so there a bunch of possibilities.
hope this helped you out!!
