I normally give people things that I've canned from the garden. I enjoy making dry flower arrangements and will give those too. It's gotten to the point where I just don't know what else to give, so homemade things are what I really believe means something to the family. Its from the heart.

I really don't know how much I spend on any one as I make all the gifts that I give for Christmas. I make candy, cookies, and pumpkin bread, put them in a basket.

I do this for about 3-5 family members and then a few co-workers.

I can't afford to buy any gifts at all and so that is what I do. Sometimes I even make crafts and give that as a gift.

Wickwire: You are a treasure.
You are speaking to Seniors
who live on Social Security or
small pensions. We don't buy
christmas presents unless
some of us have jobs.
I gave that all up many years
ago. I told all the kids, and
grandkids I could not afford
to send cards and presents.
Christmas is a very small
and personal holiday around here. It suffices, it is only
one day after all. I left the
BUY BUY BUY syndrome
long ago.

There's no set amount, we only buy for the immediate family and a few friends. I buy a few gifts for my friends in the nursing home. I usually send my mom a gift card and a gift to my sister and brother who live elsewhere. We always try to be with my daughter and her guy for Christmas and we get them something. Mostly we like to purchase things for a nice dinner, making some cookies or desserts, and getting games to play together. The time we get to be together is the important thing.

The thought of Christmas scares me this year. I have three kids (two adult, one 10) and my elderly dad, and I can't really afford to buy much of anything for anyone. It's going to be hard even covering the dinner. And the holidays are grim since my mom died.

I'm sure it'll work out somehow, but right now it's hanging over my head like a ton of bricks, and I really don't want to think about it.

Some years ago our family switched from everyone buying everyone else a gift, to elfster.com where we register our wish lists and the site picks one person for us to give to.[we leave the little kids off this list]

SO for the adult whose name I get, I spend close to $200. [when I have the money!]...I spend around $30-40 for each of the little kids...and around $25-$30 for two bestest friends.

Probably about $30.00 each. Sometimes I give $$$$ or gift card along with the gift. I have only 8 family members and then there is my charity work.

Since I and most of my friends have reached a point in life where we pretty much have the things we need, we no longer exchange presents but, instead, make a donation to a favorite charity. The amount is up to the individual.

We plan about $1000 in total 4 kids, 7 grandkids and others here and there. Between the wife and self it don't usually cost much and goes by the spirit and cash available.
