What was the XYZ Affair? What events caused it?

Alex doesn't have this one right. X, Y, and Z were Frenchmen asking for a bribe before negotiations between France and America could begin. This was in 1797-98 at the time of the Quasi War with France. See the info below borrowed from the site listed.

"Tensions heightened in April 1798, when President John Adams reported to Congress on the XYZ Affair. The previous year, in an attempt to prevent war, Adams sent a delegation to Paris to negotiate peace between the two nations. Upon arriving in France, the delegation was told by three French agents, referred to in reports as X, Y, and Z, that in order to speak to Foreign Minister Charles Maurice de Talleyrand, they would have to pay a large bribe, provide a loan for the French war effort, and Adams would have to apologize for anti-French statements. Refusing to comply, the delegation departed and returned home."

the XYZ affair is where three americans met up with brits who tried to make us bribe them during the war of 1812. the events that led up to it were the british taking our saliors and ships even when they werent war ships

US wished conflict! people have been in outrage, and Adams have been given Congress to have a militia and develop the size of the army. yet later they signed a treaty and all and sundry replaced into chuffed yet Adams, who fired 2 of his cabinet officers for being losers, and or helping great violence and different pointless stuff. me
