DB has it - and her site listed confirms - but the more specific answer is that the candidate with the second most votes for president would become the vice president. There were often more than two men running.

Excerpt from DB's source - "The election exposed one of the flaws in the original Constitution. Members of the Electoral College could only vote for president; the vice president was the person who had the second largest number of votes."

Back then, the way the elections were formatted were that there were two canadates, a Whig and a Democrat. The loser of the race became VP.
