I need ideas for a christmas float, which is being made by my school, but we have a VERY limited budget, only $100-$200. So I need ideas! It needs to be a good idea but a cheap idea. I have an SCA meeting monday and I will suggest these ideas and the best one will be the best answer. REMEMBER CHEAP! Also, please provide DETAILS! Thanks!

Go to sears (or Lowes, Home Depot, or walmart) on Black Friday and purchase a GE Lights and Sounds of Christmas. It normally costs $100 and will be on sale so you can pick one up cheaply.

I presume you have a 2000 watt generator.

The Lights and sounds of Christmas will control 1440 watts of lights using 6 channels and will play several pre-programmed songs.

This will allow you to have sychronized lights, music and lights.

Build a nice background have fun with the lights.

Christmas Float Ideas

why not have a lunch delivered for the teachers from a sub shop or pizza place or something like that? Or make them individual buckets of homemade cookies ( walmart has cheap but cute plastic tubs). I am tossing the idea around about making home-made chocolate truffles and flavored hot chocolate for the 15 teachers, aides and busdrivers I need to gift this year. as for the kids...why not a cute cello giftbag from the dollar store with gerber graduates snacks, small books from the dollar store, and maybe a few other little things. until just a few years ago I would put together a small bag for all the teachers and busdrivers for my kids. In it was a small lotion, lip balm, nail clippers, and a handful of christmas candy.

You can do the north pole. All you need is snow, elves and Santa. Maybe some reindeer. You can add a tree or a sign indicating that it's the north pole. The elves can be putting presents in a sleigh or in Santa's bag?

does your school have a theme for the float or does the parade them.

How many are riding on this float? You already have a trailer?
Is there a overall theme to the parade? How long and wide is your float.

Use white sheets and chicken wire to make snow drifts...you can also use white glittler paint or flocking to spray on sheets once you have the drifts shaped in different ways. Snowman are cheap to make...and so are candy canes.

Lights are cheap also, but do you have a generater or ac to dc converter. Either way...anykind of white lights would be really cool if you can find some battery powered ones.

Layout the chicken wire and run it down the length of the trailer and off the trailer about 4-5 feet. Attach one side of the wire to the side of the trailer with plastic zip ties. Then start bending it to be like snow drifts. The length will come to the back of the trailer when you start bending the wire and putting dips in it like the snow drifts. Of the other side of the wire, bend it down to create height.
Do the same thing on the other side of the trailer also. You can make them as wide as you want leaving a walk space in the middle of the trailer. Where the snow drifts come down...you can place people here...or at the front of the trailer or even in the back of the trailer. Place a white sheet over the chicken wire. You can use a white sheet or some really cheap cotton fabric from Walmart or a fabric place. Just get as many yards as you need to cover both sides. So 1 yard of fabric equals 3 feet...and you will need about 18 feet per side. So about 6 yards per side...can usually find cheap white fabric for about $1-$2 dollars per yard. Chicken wire should be about $7-$8 dollars for 15 foot roll. Not sure...but about. Plastic zip ties are about $5-10 bucks for a whole bunch in a package.

Flock the fabric or sheets after you put on the chicken wire and zip tie them to the chicken wire so they dont fly off. you may have to zip tie the sheets every 5 inches or so to keep sheet on.
Use more chicken wire and make large ball. End to end about 7 feet or so, then again on the open sides....end to end...cover in sheet with a 6-8 foot 2x4 in the middle...zip tie ball and sheets together and then to 2x4 on one side of the ball. Make sure 2x4 is inside the ball. Then do another wire ball about 4-5 feet end to end. Place on top of first ball with 2x4 inside the wire. Cover with sheet and zip tie to other ball through sheet and zip tie to 2x4. More than likely your second snowball will go exceed the height of you 2x4. Zip tie as much ball as you can. You may have to cut or two wires to fit 2x4 inside second ball and even first ball. Flock the sheets and set Snowman upright. Then zip tie to back of trailer. You can paint in black eyes or use the fuzzy pipe cleaners to make eyes. For a nose, you can cut piece of chicken wire off and roll into cone shape.....as long as you desire. Get some felt or orange fabric...to cover shape. You can zip tie this to the smaller snowball on top somewhere in middle of where it will be facing out. when you cover with fabric, cut hole as needed in white to get it around the cone. Then add orange fabric. Donot flock the orange... you can make mouth using more black pipe cleaners. This is your big piece and should be in the back of the float zip tied to the back of the trailer. Use Gliter if you want to make effect a little more shiney. Some of the flock spray has gliter in it. You shouldnt need anyone to hold it but can have someone next to it if needed.
Get lots of empty boxes, from school or from local market or walmart. Cover with wrapping paper and bows. play all over the float next to someone riding on float. Try to find the biggest boxes you can...or within reason...bigger than normal boxes. Every one can have a gift next to them and throw some candy canes out to the kids. Small individual wrapped are cheap and come in bulk from stores. If you can place white lights on top of snow drifts, great...if not...then put on try to out line the trailer with lights. You can put butcher paper across the sides with your clubs name and "Dreaming of a White Christmas" on it....Or the theme of the parade. If you have music, play Dreaming of a white christmas or Its beginning to look a lot like christmas. Dress in sweaters and knit caps....with scarves if you want... Cheap way to do scarves is to buy a couple of yards of fleece and cut lenght so everyone can have a scarf of same color...Use school colors or red...for Christmas.

Color coordinate as much as possible. Total price for materials should be about $50 to $100. Use what's left to help with same color knit caps and scarves. Some of these materials you may already have...like everybody can bring their own color wrap to wrap their box. And someone has white lights...these are pretty cheap anyway. Also the school cheerleaders may have the butcher paper...for signs they do at games....see if your advisor cant talk to cheerleader advisor and use some of it or know where you can buy it.
Have fun regardless....the construction of this shouldnt take you all more than an afternoon to do (2-3 hours tops) and take down should be less.
Any questions, just ask. Hope it helps...and Good Luck!
