Guys only learn about it if they live around women going through it. Many boys who do not have sisters never find out until they have a girlfriend, and even then they might not find out until the relationship is in its later stages when the guy knows the girl long enough.

About the same time they pull the girls aside in school and show them "the movie" and tell them about their periods....they have a separate "talk" with the boys too.
