No it can't hurt you but it can help you. The government can't discriminate against the disable anyway, besides there are alot of programs for the disabled through the government that help and they can help get the right job for you,on the plus side you get a disability cheque while they are helping you out. So my answer to you would be NO it can't hurt you it can only HELP you!!!

If you file for disability, it means you are requesting financial help from the government because your disability precludes you from working.
It is very important to prove that you are disabled via medical records and evaluations; more than one doctor may be involved. You must submit all the required information to the government agency that requests it. A disabled person may get preference for public housing because it is hard to live on the amount you get, similar low-income to welfare. You may get preference for education as well. However, being on disability CAN hurt you in some ways socially. And if you get disability status and are discovered to not need it, the government looks at that as fraud, which is a felony.
As an example, I know a person who went to multiple doctors until she got one to declare her back was so bad she could not work: she got public housing and stayed home with her kids when they were small. Her social worker saw her playing softball and got a photo of her up at bat and running bases: she was prosecuted and has to pay back all the money she got over the years. She is lucky to have avoided prison time; she nearly spent time in jail.
Most of my disabled friends prefer to work; they know that some day they may not be able to, so they try and lead a full life while they still can.

Dadwants you to file for disability? Question ; Are you disabled? If you are not the filing and receiving benefits is fraud on the government and the penalties can be severe. Depending on the sitting judge you may be the guest of the jail for quite a while. If you are actually disabled, thru the military or through work or birth get advice from your doctor, find and file the appropriate forms with the proper agency. An interview and physical exam attesting a condition should be OK for you to receive benefits.

It depends on what the disability is for - temporary, permanent, or ?? You will need to check the form to see what they need, but a doctor usually has to fill out forms also - they don't just take your word for it.

I wanted to add that it can hurt you in the future as far as medical coverage goes - the whole pre-existing condition thing, etc. - not sure, but you should check into that too.
