house prices are governed by economy in a particular area.
Yes you can buy a house there at 1/3rd the price- but the jobs in the area pay 1/3rd the salary. PA is not the only place that this holds true- go about the same distance into upstate NY- you will find barely any houses as high as 250k.
Houses are only worth what people can pay for them- and in certain area of PA and NY along with IN,MI,and OH - there are NO good jobs- most people travel a hour to make $10 bucks a hour and think thats alot,
So how much do you think those people could afford.
If economy allowed them to make more money- they could afford to pay more for a home- and more people would live there - and they would pay even more to live there.
Then it would be just like the area of NJ where you live.

Because you live in Jersey which is over crowded, but situated between Philly & NY. It had excellent schools, good paying jobs, the ocean and some decent skiing within an hours drive. Pennsylvania has coal, coal, coal and Yuegling Beer. I myself would prefer to live in Pennsylvania, because even though Jersey has tremendous wealth it has some awful cities (Trenton, Camden & Newark) and really really rude transplanted Long Islanders in Ocean county.

Same house that is 299K in PA, is 720K in Maryland. Its all about location. If you live in a wealthy state suck as New Jersey, or Maryland, then you pay for location. Good schools, plentiful jobs etc.

My friend, since you sound young - I'm going to give you a free lesson - not all homes in PA are cheap and not all homes in NJ are expensive. Next time your in PA, have your dad drive you through The Main Line of Villanova, Haverford, Bryn Mawr, & Wayne and see how your dad's home stacks up.
