The rich people ignore the homeless, or the homeless people ignore the rich, because they have the right and freedom to choose to ignore someone or not. If you don't want to ignore the other people, it is you choice, go for it.

I see a lot of stereotyping going on here on both sides. Not all rich people ignore the homeless and not all homeless are lazy and undeserving.
I think when people ignore the homeless it is because they don't know how to handle it. Some feel they are undeserving of help and others may not even think about the homeless.
I volunteered at a homeless shelter and there were many hard working people that were there because they had no choice. Many had jobs that they went to every day and earned their paychecks. Others had been laid off and were looking for jobs every day and many got jobs. Most just needed a place to stay until they could get back on their feet again.

I think your question should be rephrased to "Why do some people ignore the homeless?"
Certain members of society shun the homeless, for the most part, because they're not comfortable or familiar with the life-style of the homeless. The way they behave when confronted with a homeless person, is often mistaken for aloofness, when in fact, it's not.
Most of us are uncomfortable when faced with unfamiliar circumstances, it's human nature. Those that take the time to familiarize themselves with homeless people do discover that they (the homeless) are like the rest of us ... a sister, a brother, a son, a mother. If only we'd take that time and embrace it, while reaching out to the homeless ... the world would be a much better place for all of us.

Not just rich people ignore the homeless. Anyone who does not to admit that a problem exists when a person lives in rags, maybe a box over them, will simply look the other way. The reality is simply too painful, or awkward, that the people passing by do not know what to do!

I can't speak for others, but here's why I often ignore the homeless...
What you get in life is a result of what you do, bad luck or good luck has very little to do with it.
When I see a homeless person on the streets of Toronto, I think of the things that they could do to elevate their position in life. Things other than sitting on a curb begging for cash.
And I've done to help some of these people things that none of you ever have. Time and time again I'm shown the same thing, these people are on the streets because they are not choosing to do anything about it, even when given an opportunity.
Here's a little homework for all you out there thinking the homeless should be given constant free hand outs...
Go talk to the first homeless person you see, ask them why they are where they are. Now offer them a reward for doing something for you. See how many actually follow through. And how many just flake off, and crawl back in to their corner to beg.
I say they're all lazy (as a majority, I'm sure there are exceptions; I'm yet to meet any).
Good day ya'll

I have no idea and not all of the wealthy do this. Perhaps they fear it could be them one day. Some people believe it is typically due to sloth or other character flaw and desrves to be ignored. I have always found those with the least to spare to be the most generous. I think they have more empathy or have been there before.
I am abit leery of giving to panhandlers because of all the stories in the news about how well off they are and some are actually rich and enjoy begging. If I feel in my heart to give, I do and that is the only gift that would be blessed. (or give good karma)

Nobady should ignore poor people. They didn't choose to be poor and homeless.
But rich people are not the only who ignore them. Many rich people help them too.
But the goverment is the only one who can acctually do something good and big for them. They never should be ignored by Goverment and politicans (and they are rich and have a power)
