Yes, a smaller kind of tampon is better to work with for the first few times. Actually, even a regular probably won't hurt as bad this time--chances are, you broke your hymen last time and that's why it hurt so bad! If you go to a Walmart, Target, or drugstore, you shouldn't have any problem finding slim/light tampons.
If you choose to continue using a pad, get a thinner one--a regular or mini pad instead of a maxi. It will help; just don't forget, you have to change it more often!

If you can feel wetness on the pad it's time to change the pad. Maybe just changing the pad more often will help you not be so uncomfortable.
As far as tampons, yes, you might want to try the smaller size. You might also try angling it differently when you put it in. Angle it back instead of up. And you can put some lubricant such as K-Y Jelly on the tampon to help make insertion more comfortable.

ok. there are a couple of options for you. you can try using a small/lighter tampon or you can choose a thinner pad (always has the best pads, playtex has the best tampons, never use tampax). remember to change them regularly and if they are less protection definitely check them often to prevent "accidents". if you really dont want to wear a pad then you might try to put a slight amount of lubricant on the tip of the tampon, then try inserting. remember that it will get easier as you get older, so even if it isnt exactly working for you right now you can try every once in a while to try to become more comfortable with the act. try to keep yourself relaxed while attempting to place the tampon, the more tense you are the harder it will be. best of luck to you.

I know from experience that pads can be VERY EXPENSIVE,but you might want to try different brands of pads to see which kind of pad would be best for you. I have always used Kotex because they are the best and I really like their overnight pad because it works very well.
Some people just cannot tolerate tampons no matter what size they are and that is okay. I would just try different brands of pads to see which ones that you like the best! ;-)

buy a pad you feel comfortable in!!!! try a pair with the soft cotton at the top. try not to walk weird or people will notice.
buy the slim tampons or Playtex Sport. they're shaped really nicely so they can actually glide in for people that are small.

Are you new to being part of post-puberty population of women?? Feminine hygience products can always be found in a store......and if not, ASK someone who works there! As far as pads go, they are gross and uncomfortable. Try the smallest tampon you can find, lube it up and put it in. Don't worry about "losing" it in there or putting it in too far. There's nothing to be afraid of, millions of women wear tampons....I promise you, your vagina isn't so unique that it can't handle a tampon.

You need to buy an economy size box of rags. They don't hurt and aren't nearly as expensive. You can cut them up into just the right size. Women have used them since who knows when. Why change a good thing?
