You have a challenging essay on your hands. Phew!!
You could argue that a person's appearance tells its own story. In essence, appearance is not misleading. Whatever a person is on the inside, will be manifested on the outside. For example, you could say that if a person looks dirty, sloppy and careless, one would assume that he/she is careless about hygiene, and therefore careless about work and life in general. If a person dresses meticulously, (shoes are clean and shiny, clothes are well-pressed and coordinated), carries herself/himself with dignity, one has to assume that the individual is conscientious and has some sense of what is acceptable.

Since a neat, clean appearance is used as a measuring stick of discipline and good moral character, in the military, it is seen as very important. That is why military people are often subjected to physical inspections to see if they are clean and properly groomed. If they do not care about grooming, it implies to their superiors that they lack discipline and sound character. In reality, you've probably known many people who did not look neat and clean, but who were disciplined and decent individuals.

In a more base tone, you would probably also agree that if a dog begins to growl and show his teeth, it is fair to assume that he is hostile and very likely to attack you. Likewise, if you met someone who never spoke, never smiled, always seemed standoffish, it would be fair to assume that the person is unfriendly (even though some would argue that the person was very nice but just shy and socially awkward.) Similarly, you could assume that someone who looks dirty, probably also smells awful. Good luck with your assignment.

All appearences are a sterotypical thing. People are all steryotyped. Example-all gay men are feminine. Not true Alot od gay men are very strong athletic masculine men. Samething with lesbians, not all of them are butch. There are also people that say, people that look like country folk are dumb, just because someone wears bibs, boots, and has long scagly facial hair, doesn't mean they're dumb. Just take what the writer says, and flip it around a bit. I hope this will kind of help!

The opposing argument is that he intends for readers to take everything at face value. If there's no evidence for that, you might have picked too easy an argument. What's the book? Might there be a social commentary going on or something?

That is a toughy...you can say...
However, appearances can tell you a lot about a persons character. If they are well groomed it tells you that they take pride in they way they look. If a person doesn't take care of themselves, it gives a message of carelessness/laziness.

and you can just go from there...but its just a suggestion..i hate essays too lol good luck

Appearances are meant to be seen as they show and have no symbolism or secondary meaning. What you see is what it is.

First impressions are the most lasting.
What you see is what you get.
