Ladies, we are a vocal and important minority!

Should we be allocated some more oranges to encourage us?

I am a bit curious about how the system works, and why the #1 answerer in this section doesn't have orange. Is it because of the quality of answers given?

That may well be true Patois, yet it equally applies to Female posters with TC badges who also post questions here more appropriate to singles and dating or psychology. Not that the lines don't blue anyway.

There are 5 models of affirmative action.

Model I : Is a quota model. (A certain number of jobs, promotions or classroom seats are set aside for women or minorities.) Model I plans are usually defended as remedial; they attempt to provide effective remedies for prior race or sex discrimination. Some model I plans look to social needs as well as past discrimination for their justification. Model I plans are scrutinized most closely by courts and are NOT uniformly rejected as improper. The Supreme Court approved a Model I plan in "United Steelworkers v. Weber." Model I plans are not always self-imposed. Some have been enacted by courts as well as Congress.

Model II: Preference systems in which women or minorities are given some preference over white men. This model is distinguished from Model I in that is not rigid, it is race and gender conscious but is flexible. (See "Firefighters Local Union No. 1784 v. Stotts). In this model, there are no set quotas to be filled, but race/gender is given special attention or preference.

Model III: Self-examination plans in which the failure to reach expected goals within expected periods of time triggers self-study, to determine whether or not discrimination is interfering with a decision-making process. This model is prevalent in government and large private industries. The model typically involves utilizing goals and timetables for the inclusion of women and minorities in certain job categories. This involves an analysis that may reveal that in certain job categories the number of women or minorities is less than one would expect, given the number of qualified women and minorities in the local labor market. If the employer discovers a disparity, the employer attempts to determine the reason. Timetables are set in response to a disparity that is found, and progress is noted toward the timetable goal. If the goal is not reached, this warrants further self- examination to determine whether or not discrimination is occuring somewhere in the selection system. Most federal contractors are required to adopt affirmative action plans using this model.

Model IV: Outreach plans in which attempts are made to include more women and minorities within the pool of persons from which selections are made. This model was formed based on the assumption that a workforce or school enrollment which contains few minorities or women is the result of insufficient knowledge or communication. This model seeks to more actively recruit. Support programs for women and minorities is another form of Model IV affirmative action. The assumption behind such Model IV plans is that race and sex discriminiation have created social barriers which make it harder for minorities and women to qualify for those positions without assistance.

Model V: affirmative commitments not to discriminate. Two aspects to this model: active non-discrimination, and passive non-discrimination. For example, when a court's decision that an individual was the victim of unlawful discrimination which results in the payment of damages and an order of employment, admission, or re-instatement, the remedy is likely to be perceived as a form of affirmative action.

*The Supreme Court's decisions on affirmative action cases suggest that any affirmative action plan must be narrow in scope, and tied to well-established prior discrimination. Model I plans must fall within strict limits or they are impermissable. Model II plans will be carefully scrutinized but are likely to be approved. Models III, IV, and V are uniformly permitted.

*Much discussion and debate has gone on in this forum regarding affirmative action, yet few people really seem to know what it really is. Most don't even know there are 5 models...many think only of the quota model. My own personal opinion is that quota models can be harmful, and Model II seems suspect to me as well. But models III, IV, and V are the most widely used, endorsed by the government, and clearly non-discrimanatory. These models do NOT cause the "reverse discrimination" that Models I and II may cause. Clearly there is a need for self-examiniation, remedies, scrutiny, and recruitment. I think people need to educate themselves a little more on the subject of all models of affirmative action before they decide that "all of it" is bad.

(I know this whole history lesson really doesn't have much if anything to do with your original question, but, I get so tired of hearing people putting down affirmative action so I decided to post something that might be educational for all.)

According to Yahoo, the TC badges are applied to contributors who demonstrate knowledge in a particular section, and is based on the person's "current" participation.

The badges come and go depending on if you are answering a lot of questions and also (apparently) if your answers are being chosen as 'best' in the particular category.

Yahoo's answers about this tend to seem a little vague, and no-one knows exactly what formula is used to determine a TC, but it comes and goes.

If you look at the leaderboard, you'll notice that anyone who hasn't been around for a while doesn't have one, even if they have thousands of best answers.

On the other hand, the TC in 'Bullfighting' has just 33 best answers, way below most other people's numbers ~ but in that category there wasn't huge traffic, so maybe there was not big comeptition for TC spots, or he just happened to know all there was to know and got a lot of best answers.

Most people don't take it too seriously ~ the more questions you answer the more likely it is you'll get (statistically) fewer 'best' answers and the orange badge will disappear one night!

Cheers :-)

I'm not a fan of affirmative action, but I wanted to point out that Y! gives badges based on active participation, there is no "right way" to become a TC in any category, they just pass em out and take em away at will. I don't think anyone knows exactly how it works. When I first started in GWS, I was on here everyday for a few hours a day, and had 5-10 best answers a day, still no TC badge, then I stopped posting daily and voila! there it was. Then a few months later they took it away. lol whatever, doesn't seem to have any clout in this category. Maybe in Mathematics it would, but everyone is pretty opinionated around these parts, myself being one of the worst. I don't think I get many of those accolades anymore because I stopped trying, honestly lol.

I'm sure you'll get it soon, hold tight :-)

Well even with the top 10 posters, I never make it on the list even though I've alot of best answers in this catagory, but that's because the top 10 lists are only for people in other countries such as US or UK. There's none for Australia.
So with you being an Aussie as I am, you'll not make it onto the top 10 list anytime soon. But if you do have great answers to any of my questions, I'll be sure to seriously consider you for best answer to help you achieve your TC badge.

Good answer, Tera. That was enlightening. I support the final model and not a single one of the other ones. On that basis, us guys in the GWS forum don't deserve any special breaks.

Besides, I'd think that if I ever got that balloon, I'd quit the next day. Nowhere to go from there but down.

i'm no longer likely to talk approximately feminism, yet an occasion of valuable discrimination which i've got faith is justified in my very own usa. As a usa we've in basic terms long previous via a 30 12 months long conflict know because of the fact the worries, have been Republican (people who needed a united eire) Loyalist (people who needed NI to stay interior the united kingdom) paramilitaries butchered one yet another as nicely as contributors of the regulation enforcement and hundreds of harmless civilians. although the police stress, the RUC became additionally to blame or colluded in many murders themselves via the years. a lot of human beings believed it is because of the fact the RUC became bias (The RUC became a ninety 5% protestant stress). in contemporary times this has been shown to be authentic. between the prerequisites interior the peace technique became the trend record which pronounced, in short that the recent PSNI (police provider of Northern eire) could hire valuable discrimination while recuting new contributors. So as an occasion there are one hundred positions open 500 non- catholics word one hundred catholics word (those are the communities they use) The recuiters could take 50 non-catholics and 50 catholics. the explanation given for this became that it would take far too long for the PSNI to be seen as consultant and non bias is organic recuitment became to happen. I consider this place because of the fact the RUC, because of the fact of it is makeup pre-1998 facilated discrimination of the wost form. valuable discrimination and affermative action at the instant are and returned mandatory. playstation . Catholics who prefer to connect the PSNI are to be congratulated INHO as no longer in basic terms are they the objectives of dissident republicans, who purpose them and their families because of the fact they sort nationalists who help the police stress as traitors yet they are training making NI a extra inclusive place. No see you later in the past it became unlawful to fly the Irish fag right here, votes have been rigged infavour of unionists and nationalist civil rights protesters have been overwhelmed interior the streets. while a team is disenfranchised by applying a society the society could play a function to win their have faith decrease back.

You get those orange badges if you have a certain percentage of best answers in the badge category.( usually a serious catagory; not ideological ) How many male TC's do you think possible in GWS?

Suggestion. Try a category you are good at and stop hanging around here all the time. I just answered 3 stoichiometry questions in chemistry and I can barely keep abreast of the questions, let alone stem the tide of endless questions in the science section.

I'm just not that into affirmative action, I think the reasoning behind it is noble, but in the practical world application, it isn't really working too well.

Why oranges? Am I missing something?

Im not a fan of affirmative action anyway. quota systems just lead to resentment at best and poor quality of product at worst.

Males and females who make positive contributions related to actual Gender and Women's Studies questions and issues are surely considered equally. Unfortunately, few men are actually participating in this category appropriately. There most certainly are a few males who post appropriate questions and answers for this category. But, the majority of the questions and answers posted in this category by males are actually not related to this category and should be posted either in Singles and Dating or Psychology categories. This is not exactly the correct category to be posting in if one hates or has a problem with women or cannot get a date.
