did you by any chance, rename your home folder? if you did then go into itunes, select iTunes>Preferences>Advanced> and then change the file path. dont ever change the name of your home folder! if you didnt change the name, go into your finder, go into Music>iTunes>iTunes Music. your data should be in there. then just drag and drop the folder into itunes. :) hope i answered your question :)

First let's get an understanding of "library". As Apple uses the word, it means a database that lists all your songs. It is not the song files themselves. If that is what you mean, then you didn't loose anything very important except your playlists. To put all the songs, videos and podcasts that are on your hard drive back into your library list, just open iTunes, go to File > Add to library. Then select your hard drive icon, click "Choose". Wait a long time for it to add everything. But I would never do that because I don't want every multimedia file on my hard drive to be in my iTunes library. An alternative: Quit iTunes. Go to your home folder > Library > Preferences. Delete com.apple.itunes.plist. Open iTunes and it will think it is brand new and ask you if you want it to look for songs ansd stuff on your hard drive.

If you actually deleted all your songs (that would be pretty hard to do but I have heard people claim to have accidentally deleted 10,000 songs) from the Mac but they are on your iPod, and you don't want to pay $20.48 U.S. dollars for MusicRescue, you can get Senuti for free and it does the same thing -- link below.

Ok, i don't know why your computer deleted your songs so I can't tell you how to prevent that from happening in the future. BUT, to get the songs back on there you can download a program called music rescue..
