Because depsite what people have been taught since the beginning of the English language over hundreds of years SORRY isn't an apology anymore!!
I am surprised that this only came to light 2 weeks ago, I thought people actually edited the Dictionary but this must have the greatest oversight of the English Language EVER!
Do I have to go around and actually say I "APOLOGISE" to all the people I mistakenly said "SORRY" to believing I was apologising!!!
I will say SORRY, because in 1996 I voted for Howard, I was under the influence of my parent and wasn't really interested in politics so just did what I felt was right! I have to live with that but I will say SORRYand APOLOGISE (just to make sure) for one moment of stupidity....after studying politics at University I won't make that mistake again!
Do people actually believe and vote for this clown John Howold, sorry Howard?

What annoys me about this sorry business is he should of said it 11 yrs ago and it would be in the past by now.
People think that the stolen generation are going sue the government which isn't going to happen most just want to get on with their life as much any other Aussie.
I know this from personal experience through my wonderful mother-in-law who could teach us all a lesson humility, hard work and making the best of what cards you have been dealt in life.
Munro I bet you wouldn't survive without your family and how would you feel if they were taken away from you.

Maybe because Mr Deputy-Marshal John Howard is afraid of what it could lead to. He has seen the U.S. experience with the indigenous people people of that land. He knows that politically aware Aboriginal people are in contact with their American counterparts, their resource base is expanding and little victories have been achieved by some. Howard cannot say 'sorry' because that would entail an admission of wrongdoing by the Government, but they are the Government, so therefore they cannot be guilty of a wrongdoing as they make the "LAW". Politically and legally it could become a minefield for constitutional lawyers to have to work out. There is more I could add but I will frame it as a question instead.

I would use the word sorry, because I AM sorry that this ever happened to the aboriginal people of this country, and that so little has been done to help them grieve and re-build since.
Mr Howard won't say sorry because he isn't sorry, and because he thinks people should just get over it.
That is, unless they are
1) American, in which case he thinks they should start a war about it;
2) Weird religious nuts, in which case he thinks they should give his party lots of money and he'll help them feel just fine,
3) Right wing whackjobs, in which case he thinks they should be appointed to the board of the ABC to teach those commie announcers a loooooooong overdue lesson.
Mr Howard is starting to understand how important sorry is, though ... now that he is realising how sorry an awful lot of people are that he is PM.
Maybe next weekend he'll understand just HOW sorry :-)
Cheers :-)

Unrelated, but KQ, do us all a favour and jump off the nearest cliff.
Anyway, I think Johnny is perhaps a little too much like my hubby, he never says sorry for anything. Well, he would never used to, and with women who are hurt, usually we don't give a toss about flowers, we just want an apology when you've done something wrong that's really hurt us.
Johnny doesn't see it as his problem with what happened years ago, but really, it won't hurt him to say one little word.
Who knows, maybe Kev will say it.
I know I am sorry for all the terrible things that have happened to the Aboriginal people, and they deserve their dignity which has been taken away from them.

Mr Howard should not say "Sorry" because Mr Howard is NOT sorry. Mr Howard couldn't care less. And even if he did say sorry (without meaning it) he doesn't speak for me as an Australian and never will, even on the very rare occasions he says something I agree with.
Australia should instead concentrate on DOING something to MAKE amends for what has happened to aboriginal people. We can start by listening to their elders and acting in accordance with their wishes instead of imposing patronising colonial attitudes which led to the stolen generations.
Never mind saying sorry (which frankly is more meaningful when it is said by individual Australians and not some mouthpiece politician) we can start ACTING sorry and LISTENING to the people who have been wronged.

"If they don't control Big Business then I won't say sorry". " If it was West Pac I would say Sorry", "If it was George Bush I would say Sorry". "But they are Just People and I do not have to say Sorry" "That is the way I feel Mr.Speaker, Not sorry at all".

Mr Howard I will show you how easy it is to say sorry in a sentence.
John when you lose the election on Saturday I will be sorry, sorry it didn't happen sooner.
Look at that Johnny I said sorry twice in the same sentence.

He doesn't have to say sorry. Its the English has has to answer for this problem. They settled Australia with their unwanted. I sure as hell wont say sorry, look at them, drunk, incest, they are a very sad lot and cant help themselves. If they had a scratch amount of the pride they say they have then they can clean themselves up and prove to the world that even if they are only just over two hundred years advanced from the stone age they are a proud people and also looking to their future. Then i will definitely say WELL DONE but in the mean time no mater what government gets in they will still cost us the Aussie tax payer millions of dollars to 'keep' them the way they are.
