There is an excellent display about this subject at George Washington's home of Mt. Vernon. Maybe write to them to find out how to buy a book about their collection.

The American Revolution was an evolutionary event. It was a set of 13 colonies bound together with the mother country by common institutions and a common language It was the transition from subservient status to freedom that was like no other revolution in modern history. America was no longer in need of English rule, but the English needed the colonists' riches. A revolution of some sort was going to occur. The Revolution began after a series of attempts to reign in the American colonies. The elite and the lowly were on the same page. The elite knew that a split had to come if the potential of the colonies was to be reached. The common man was convinced that they could become more than a mere pawn for whoever the leaders were. Patrick Henry with his oratory and Thomas Paine with his writings gave the common man the idea that their concerns counted equally to those of the elite class. Together they would give their all to become free. When the revolution began in April of 1775 a series of early victories showed that the effort was worth it. George Washington's leadership was and his appointment as head of he American Revolutionary Army a key element in the eventual success of creating the United States of America. Recounting the early victories and later downturns along with the aid of the French Army and Navy should give you an outline to work with for an essay
