The release date of movies if very calculated for maximum box office and awards.

Some movie studios like to release their best Memorial day or 4th of July weekend, to cash in on the extra weekend play date, kids getting out of school, students working summer jobs (more cash to spend). Movies in the summer tend to get seen more since more people go out in better weather.

Releases about/after thanksgiving tend to be Christmas and kids movies since the malls hope the parents will park the kids in the theater while they do a couple of hours Christmas shopping.
Also with the Oscars being held early in the year, nominations tend to favor movies released late in the last year, since those can still be in theaters and fresh in the Academys mind.
Oscar nominations mean BIG box office and DVD sales, especially if they win.

That's why early November usually see the bottom of the movie releases, ones they dont expect to win oscars or draw big box office.
