- maintaining and increasing one's knowledge
- a further and deeper understanding of worldwide historical events, not just those found inside the textbooks used in school or so poorly portrayed in the movies from Hollywood's entertainment industry
- a deeper respect and understanding for humanity, and the Humanities
- an understanding of human civilization: sociolgy, religion, politics, and war
The liabilities include:
- less time available for the study of Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Games

Do you mean in college as a major, or in general?
The benefits are universal: you would know your past (the doomed to repeat it thing is true!) and would kick major butt at trivia games. You could also work as a history teacher or in a museum with a degree.
The downside to studying it for a degree is that there are very few jobs in it. However, studying it just to study it has NO downside.

The main benefit is that you see how the same thing comes around again and again, and you can see how the bad stuff could be avoided.
The main liability is that you will understand that, because other people have no clue about history, they will never actually avoid the bad stuff.
