Because they want to know!
I just read an old history that mentioned how people moving to a just opened area of Illinois found a man living there and that it seemed as if he'd lived there for some time. At one point a doctor was desperatly needed and the new people found that this hermit was a doctor. Afterward he loaded all he owned in a canoe and sailed down the river never to be seen again.
Who wouldn't want to find out neat things like that!
