I know you probably have to have a backstage pass and everything, but how do you get them? Do you have to sign up for something? I'm not sure...

It depends. "Knowing a member of the crew" generally gets you NOTHING unless the member of the crew is the tour manager or production manager. THEY are the ONLY ones with the clout to give out backstage passes.

The only legit ways to get passes - without degrading yourself are:
1. Be a member of the artist's fanclub. They often have a certain number of passes for each city to give out. Sometimes it's a fanclub contest, sometimes it's just first come, first served.
2. Win a radio contest
3. Work for the radio station sponsoring the concert, the corporate sponsor of the tour, the artists' record label or management company - those are who get 90% of any available backstage passes.
4. Know the right people. (That's who get 7 of the remaining 10%.)

NEVER ask any security personnel or generic crew member for a pass. Nine times out of ten, they don't have any, but have NO problem taking advantage of someone who wants them REALLY REALLY BAD.
