Washington is a great place, but Eastern Washington is the best part of Washington and the people here are wonderful. The cost of living is cheaper I believe and the stress of traffic is not near as hectic. Life here is so much easier too! I love it here.

I've lived in Oregon now nearly 20 years...and I enjoy both cities. IMO Seattle is far more spendy to live in than Portland...AND Washington state have sales tax! One good reason to consider Portland over Seattle. but a cool thing if you're an Oregon resident? We get tax kickers if there's a surplus...also if you visiting WA and shop there, all you have to do is show your ODL and you are exempt from paying WA sales tax (except for food.)

If you're a bike commuter, Portland is much better...and I really like the MAX light rail.

Granted Seattle does have a major league baseball team, and Portland keeps claiming they're getting one. Culturally, both have pretty interesting museums and opera. However, the one advantage Seattle has over PDX? You can go over to Victoria, BC for tea at the Empress more often...however, I've yet to find a bookstore in Seattle that even lights a candle to Powell's City Of Books in Portland.

In terms of friendliness, both places are equally as friendly. Far more friendlier than either San Francisco or L.A.

Bottom line: Seattle...Portland...as we say here in the PNW "It's all good."

Seattle is a much bigger city than Portland, so of course they're going to have more "culture" there (reply to post before me). It's also more expensive than Portland. Public transit is MUCH better in Portland, more comprehensive. Seattle does not have the Max train. OR has no sales tax but WA has no state income tax. I think people are basically the same all up and down the West Coast as far as friendliness (aside from Californians like me who are the rudest :)

Seattle prices are already up, so if it were based on prices alone, that wouldn't be the move, I'd say... I think that Portland does have better public transit, but Seattle's is improving and hopefully the improvements will start to appear more quickly if more measures can get approved in the future...

Seattle has an even higher cost of living and it is rising faster then Portland. In fact, Seattle has been one of the highest cost of living increases for a while now.

Seattle is way more expensive than Portland. There is no income tax in Washington though so a lot of retirees like the olympic peninsula- esp. Sequim because it is in the rain shadow- and eastern Washington.

Culturally, Portland is way behind Seattle.
Seattle has a brand new Opera House, a new Symphony Hall,
a new Seattle Art Gallery.
Portland has zilch.
