It depends! Last night I went to a very influential black tie affair. I was dressed in a beautiful outfit and felt very comfortable. Others were in jeans. As much as I would like to have been in jeans I think I was dressed well. I felt slightly overdressed but that was better than underdressed.

It totally depends on the situation. Meeting with the in-laws? Better safe than sorry. Playing basketball? Better safe than sorry--but the other way.
The best thing to do is to go overdressed but with items that can easily be changed. A really nice jacket can be taken off to reveal a normal shirt and other such ideas.
