Well, that's the difference between the Republican and the Democratic parties.
Downsizing government is a goal of the GOP. This could solve several issues related to the budget, the economy, interstate relations, and so on. Putting more responsibility on the individual states allows them to learn how to me more self-sufficient. This could be a very good thing. The federal gov't has turned into a welfare system for the states. There are states that pay a lot per capita and get very little back. I've always thought the the tax system should be revamped from an individual income tax (federal) to a 'States Dues' tax system. Individual states pay for participation within the federation - which in turn provides them security (both militarily and economically)
Increasing the size of the government could potentially solve problems related to health care, welfare, and other stuff. Personally I don't think this is the way to go. Think communist society. Think lots of red tape. Think about your tax dollars that have to pay all those people...
It's an age old question. That's how we ended up with two chambers of congress.

More government anywhere, any time in history has never been the answer to the problem. It has always been the cause of the problems. Every people that ever developed into a nation, did it without government interference. When the nation gets to a point where it is worthwhile controlling and fleecing, a government is formed which always pretends to be taking care of the people but ALWAYS seeks to control the people. This leads to intense government scrutiny in our lives to the point where we are no longer free. Take Bush for example. He has no regard for the constitution and is setting up the one world government with no regard to the people of the US. He is the worst terrorist that ever lived, attacking his own people then seeking to blame it on the al-CIA-dah!

some things are run better by government and some by private companies...take the Veterans Administration and health care....it isn't a great system, but at least the care is not based on profit...I could see a company taking advantage of the fact that they would be paid on a per patient and per treatment system...that would induce them to want to get the patients in and out as soon as possible to reduce expense and raise income...the level of care would corrode even more than it has on occasion...Look at how crappy of a job Halburton is doing...they would not supply a "all day" service to eliminate the wait time and protect soldiers from being targeted during very predictable serving periods...there has been reports of tainted foods and water...some things are best done in a way that is more expensive way up front to eliminate the problems caused by scrimping

Not more per say, but a general shift in focus is what's needed now. I don't like the fact that time and money is wasted by government on social issues, like abortion and seat belt laws. Don't tell us how to live our everyday lives, we can figure that out on our own ! Government should focus on improving/ maintaining our infrastructure, and quality of life, and other domestic challenges like campaign financing reform, and also handle foreign policy matters (hopefully in a more responsible manner than it has lately)

Problems will exist forever.
Gov "solutions" will tend to cause more problems, but unless the problem is having too much money, or too much freedom they will never bring a solution.
Join the revolution. Join Ron Paul.

Our founding fathers believed government should be as small as possible. Government does not solve problems (with the exception of things like protecting our nation and its citizens from attack). Government entities are inefficient and ineffective relative to free market enterprises. We as individuals or local communities should work to solve our own problems versus looking to a government solution.

If it doesn't help, why do we still have a government? Looks like, we the people, hired the wrong bunch to manage our affairs. Time for a new bunch so we can help care for our sick, clean our environment and control our enemies.
