To PoggyWoggy:

I have lived in the Netherlands my whole life and as long as I've lived here there have always been 12 provinces so I'd like to know where you found the 13th one.

The other answerers above are right: Holland is the name of of 2 of the provinces (Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland), the Netherlands is the English name for the entire country.

The Netherlands is the official if English name of the country. in our own language it is called Nederland.

Holland is the nickname.

Holland is also the name of the region in the west of the country, now officially two provinces, which in the past have always been the most rich and influencial part of the country, where all the bigger cities are, the capital and the gouvernmental city.

It is like calling the UK England, or the USA New England.

And it is NEVER tha!!! Neither in combination with Holland nor with Netherlands.
