It all depends on how extensive of a backround check they are doing. Now, it needs to be made clear to you if they are doing a backround check or a security clearance. A basic backround check takes around two weeks from the send date, saying this I mean they should have the results no more than two weeks after sending the information. Now if they are doing a very extensive check it may take a little while longer. You will know this if they ask you questions regarding old neighbors you once had, teachers names from highschool and oddball questions like that. Now even a check like this should take at a maximum of four weeks. If you are applying for a security clearance (usually government related work) it usually takes up to six months to come back. If that is the case i wouldn't hold your breath because they normally do not come back much sooner than that. Employers sometimes do use a "Hold Tactic" which is when they are looking to lay off, or fire a specific employee but have not had the right oppurtunity while at the same time avoiding equal oppurtunity employment legislation. In this scenario they will "Hold" a qualified candidate for the job while waiting for the right time to terminate their target employee. You may want to call or request a meeting with your future supervisor and confront him about what is going on. If he will not be honest with you now, than you may want to rethink putting your financial future in this company's hands. I hope I was some help, and goodluck! I also apologize for any mispellings, my spell check would not work...

The fact that they're keeping in touch with you makes this plausible. And, as the previous answerer stated, certain kinds of background checks can take a long time. You are entitled to a copy of your background investigation from the company which prepared it. I'd start there to be sure there is nothing in the report which is creating additional hoops to jump through. In all likelihood, unless this is a government security clearance you're talking about, at least a preliminary report has been completed.

If you want to work for this company, there isn't any harm in waiting for the check to come in. Yes, it's a long time, but from what you say it doesn't sound like they're just stringing you along.

Good luck.

Believe it or not, their answers may be legit. Even with the advent of Homeland Security, sometimes fingerprint and records checks take weeks. So, don't despair. You may want to keep in touch with the company to re-assert your interest and desire to work for them. Good luck.
