I heard that Metallica once played in The Talbot pub in Burnley, Lancashire, posing as a band called 'Fade to Black' but I havn't met anyone who can confirm that.

Of course they do, occasionally. Most often it will be just one of them joining a band at a club.
U2 once opened for themselves under a different band name.
