Would you rent a vacation home in Europe? They seem much less expensive than hotels, and nicer, with more space and privacy, and you can cook. None of my friends have even done it before though. Would you or have you? And why would or wouldn't you rent one?

I have and would again because:

- it's cheaper because you don't have to eat out all the time
- you have more freedom and privacy
- you can cook and eat what you want (great for vegetarians/vegans or anyone with a special diet)
- you get to go grocery shopping, which is part of the going abroad experience: living like a local!
- you are not treated like a tourist and you get to meet your neighbors and other locals more easily
- you get the feel of the country especially if you choose a home that is traditional or typical of the region (unlike a lot of hotels that tend to be standardized)

No, I would not. When I want to do it cheap, I travel with a tent. I live in Europe and all the times I've looked into renting a mobile home for vacation I decided against it. It was more expensive and less convenient than booking a package holiday. On top of the steep rental fees you had to pay high fees for using the camping sites and for gas. (Aside from that was having to do household chores, something I like to avoid when on a holiday.) Plus you had to drive the bloody thing to its destination. No, it was much easier to pack the tent - either throwing it into the car or dragging it along in a backpack, all depending with whom I was travelling. A car goes much faster and uses less gas than a motorhome, and the camping sites charge less for pitching a tent.

When still traveling with my parents and siblings I did, six years in a row, in different places in Luxembourg.
If I was to travel with more than 4 people I would do it again, but like then I would go for houses in the villages or towns, not for places in a holiday park.
But I know many people who do that and are very pleased with that too.

In a village or town you have all comforts of home, can do your own thing, pretending to be one of the locals, if you are lucky you get in contact with the locals and have a very good time.
In the parks you can choose the class of the house, simple or more luxurious, and the class of the park, just the houses or also big swimming pool, restaurants and so on.
There you know what you pay for but also what you get. If you are the kind of people who like the walk and go out, a simple house will do, but if you like to be pampered, there are parks with all comfort of a 4* hotel in which you have your own house so your own privacy.

Defo - I've done it before and it gives you lots of freedom and privacy. It was very nice having lunch on the balcony overlooking the med without having to pay over the top prices and then whisking off to a nearby hotel for dinner with top quality service and cuisine; it's the best of both worlds.
