My brother wants to be in a band, but I told him that prolly wouldn't get anywhere with it because he can't read sheet music. He then told me that one of his favorite musicians (I forget who it was) can't read sheet music. I rolled my eyes and took it as a sign of the times, but do you guys know of any famous 'musicians' who can't read sheet music?

I cannot read music either. I am very good at learning by ear though. MY plan is to get a teacher who can take me through the steps of learning how to read music and applying that to my favorite instruments (violin, piano, guitar). It is not hard to learn music from what people tell me. However, I could be wrong. I am sure that it may be harder for some than others. Every one leans differenty. But if he can get a teacher that would be really great. It would help him a lot. It is like learning a different language. If he is good with languages, he sould be able to learn it fairly fast. All of the musicians that I know of can read music but I am sure that there are some out there who do not need to. But I really do wish your brother the best of luck :) Hope I helped!

Almost all of them. Very few of them are classically trained and learned to play by ear. (Similar to learning a language phonetically.)
