can you not save your opinions to yourselves and maybe just answer what is being asked?

If people want to give an opinion, they should go to Polls and Surveys as you have in this case. Otherwise, they should answer the question.

I have often wonder why some people don't answer the question. Someone will get 16 thumbs up and never answer the question. I have seen someone voted best answer and never answer the question. I know I add my opinion about the question from time to time and a few times I have added a opinion of the person but I at least will add "to answer your question" and I try to answer the question.

That's supposed to be the norm in a civilized society.

To answer otherwise than is asked or stray from the question is a logical fallacy.

But I'm not perfect. We're all prone to that sometimes.

I thought the same thing when i got opinions that were uncalled for, it somehow hurts just a tad doesn't it..but then i thought , that's their opinion ,that's what this site is for.. not everyone will be nice...

Perhaps we can. If we are doing that it is a good thing to point out. However; maybe some of us, not all, need to have an opinion to answer the question...

sometimes a person needs more than just an answer, though they may not like it. Like in medicine, it's important to treat the underlying problems, not just the obvious symptom.
So, yes, it is too much to ask.

No. It's not. A lot of people in this world just don't care about others feelings enough to stop themselves from making rude remarks.

absolutely not! there is always a time and a place for things, however, if you feel the need to share your opinion be ready for whatever others feel the need to say back..
