In some locations it might be advisable also to get a RADON detector. This checks for the presence of radioactive gas that might come from natural sources or from the tailings of some sorts of mining activities.

Usually this seeps into basements when it is present so that's typically where a radon detector would be placed.

A heat detector. This is different from a smoke detector. I have one and would recommend it. It measures how quickly the temperature rises and sets alarm off based on that. It's a good backup system for fire. Here's one:

Few others that are available.

Motion used for either security or to turn on a light or machine when you are in the hall or area.

Radioactive gas detectors for sensing radioactive gasses that may come from soil or other nearby sources.

Temperature. Years ago these were popular in rural areas. They usually were connected to a light (table lamp mostly) and when the temperature dropped below a set level the light would come on letting you know. If the furnace kicked on and warm air hit it then it would go out. Great for after a blackout and the power comes back on but not the furnace (pilot light out or whatever).

Pressure. Used to turn on items (again usually lights) as you walk up stairs or into a hallway. Great for catching thieves as they can't see these and the lights come on and can be rigged to have an audio alert as well that can be turned on after going to bed.
