Persepolis! It's a graphic novel. Make sure that's okay. It's wonderful.

The Diary of Anne Frank is a classic.

Both of these depict teenage girls who are forced to grow up during some bad times. It offers a unique look into how differently life goes for people in different circumstances, as well as how it is the same.

Parallel Journeys Eleanor H. Ayer With Helen Waterford And Alfons Heck.
It is a double autobiography. Helen Waterford survived Auschwitz, Alfons Heck was in the Hitler Youth and German Air force. They take turns telling their stories. It is incredible.

The Diary of Anne Frank is amazing. And I'm currently reading Anne Frank: The Biography. This one starts out slow, but afer reading it for a while you get sucked into what's going on in the life of the Franks as they hide from the German Nazis.

I'd suggest you go to Amazon.com, check out their recommendations for girls your age. They recently had an offering of good books, both fiction and non-fiction, for 4th & 5th graders - try entering in "Search" "young adult non-fiction" or "teenage non-fiction" - I bet you'll find so many choices you'll wish you had a lot more time to read!

There are a lot of "what every girl should know" kinda books out there - non-fiction, but with lots of interesting examples, stories from real life. Have fun with this!
