it may not be a reaction at all, or it may be a physical change

hydrates have water as part of the crystal for a compound or molecule

when heated the water can be lost

this will de-stabilize the lattice and the crystal structure may eventually collapse

it may become amorphous (non-crystalline) or may become a new crystal (anhydrous form)
