What's my opinion worth? So I'll quote some people who DO speak from experience.
"You've got Patrick Roy and other leaders in this locker room, but Joe's been the unquestioned leader. I've played with and against the best leaders in the game. The glare of Mark Messier, the ferocity of Scott Stevens, the unspoken confidence of Mario Lemieux or Steve Yzerman. None of them can beat the honest but steely leadership by example of Joe Sakic. Some people wondered why I didn't ask for the captain's `C'. But this team already had the best leader I've ever played with."
--Ray Bourque
"Some players feel they have to be running their mouths all the time, and it gets old. Joe picks his spots to say something--and when he does, you can put about six exclamation points behind it."
--Patrick Roy
"Joe knows a little bit about everything. Just look at him over there. Go over there and listen. You'll learn something, I promise."
--Rob Blake
"The ultimate working star. Pure class, on and off the ice."
--Ron Tugnutt
-------------------
Side note: Sakic won't give interviews about it, but when he was in junior, his team's bush crashed and four of his teammates were killed in the accident. It is said that Sakic began to show his truest signs of a leader in the aftermath of that tragedy.

A) Not all Stanley Cup winners have had a Canadian captain.........Dallas was captained by Michigan's Derian Hatcher in 1999 and Chicago was captained by Ukrainian Johnny Gottselig in 1938
There are a ton of very good captains in the NHL right now.....
Chris Pronger in Anaheim
Jarome Iginla in Calgary
Rod Brind'Amour in Carolina
Joe Sakic in Colorado
Miklas Lidstrom in Detroit
Saku Koivu in Montreal
Daniel Alfdredsson in Ottawa
Vincent Lecavalier in Tampa
Mats Sundin in Toronto

Joe Sakic. So many others above me have said why, so I won't belabor any of those points. The way he carries himself and his team is rare in this day and age of egotism and greed, not to mention how he's stayed with the same franchise for his entire professional career. I can think of no other person who is more important to their team than Joe. To be honest, he's the only reason I've remained interested in the NHL after Bettman f-ed it all up.

Sakic and/or Sundin. Simply for the years they have logged with a C. Time spent is evidence of a work ethic. However, Stevens was my favorite back in the day.

" Sugar Joe " Sakic, closely followed by Alfie...Joe has shown class and leadership for years, and has helped the younger players. A great player too, in the mold of Stevie Yzerman..

I have got to say Nicklas Lidstrom.
Having learned from the likes of a former captain in Steve Yzerman and now clearly the QB of the entire Redwing team, he controls the game from almost every stand point. His calm, cool, and confident demeanor clearly rubs off to his other players and once again, we see his Detroit Redwings atop the competitive Western Conference.

Sakic, you can't ask for a better guy to lead his team to victory, and Saku Koivu after battling cancer he has came back with a chip on his shoulder and leading the Habs.

Depends on what you mean by 'best captain'. The best scoring captian for me is Crosby, but I think the best one is Sakic.
