A realist sees things as he/she believes they really are. An idealist see things as he/she would like them to be or how he/she thinks they will become (improved.) Hope this helps.

an idealist is someone who would be unrealistic. a visionary. im personally an idealist. but a realist is someone who is more realistic. that would be my sister. =]
