So yesterday i was using my PC and playing online and my screen froze. i tried ctrl alt del to get the task manager to comeup and nothing happened, so i pushed the manual reset button, then it would not reload, nothing except the powering on of my fans and hard drives, no bios, no video card info nadda, so i tested everything i had that could cause the problem, except the mobo and processor cause i didnt have other to use to test, so i bought a processor, its just an old socket 370 PIII, and replaced it and now it works great. So my question is, is that what happens when a processor goes out, or is there any other issues i need to investigate to ensure it does't happen again. And i dont need to hear, time to upgrade, cause i know and when i have money i will. Any other input is appreciated, thank you.

so it had new thermal grease and the fan is new and working great, and as well this mobo processor combo does not support any software that tells you the temp of your processor, and for those interested, everest id the ultimate piece of software to tell you anything like that.

You might want to check the temp on your CPU. It sound like a over heat issue on your CPU. Don't over clock your CPU and make sure the CPU fan is working properly.

When a processor goes out, you can't run your computer at all, nothing will work correctly because the CPU is the thing that accesses all the other parts. You may get power to the other parts, but without a processor giving orders, all you get are lights and sounds in your computer. To ensure that your processor doesn't go out, you must make sure its not running hot, or over 60C. You can probably find some software to tell you the temperature, or find one on the computer already; I use ATI Tray Tools since I have an ATI card. If it is running hot, make sure your heatsink is properly installed and has new paste put on each time its taken off. Other than heat, only a surge through the computer would make it go out, and usually you will notice other problems before noticing the CPU.

Yes, processors can fail--especially when overclocked or permitted to overheat. Never buy a processor from a system that might have been overclocked.
So, if you replaced the processor, make sure that the silicon grease that seals the processor to the heat sink/spreader/fan is fresh. This makes sure the heat gets drawn away from the CPU chip. Make sure the fans (all of them) are working. Make sure your system is protected with a UPS. Make sure the system is clean and clear of dust on the inside.

Processors rarely fail. the order of common conponent failure are

HARD DISK
MOTHERBOARD
POWER SUPPLY
FAN

To keep your CPU in good Condtion you need to put Heatseak compound between the Heatsink and the CPU its self this will allow for proper heat transfer and cooling.

Well, you probably have the old CPUs which don't autoshutdown when they hit a certain heat. It burned itself out, over 100 degrees probably.

yes, they can go out. the fan on the processor more then likely failed causing the processor to over heat frying it.

well sometimes just ask yourself, wht did this happen, its all systematical when it somes to CPU, its all electric..
if you think its the CPU, then it might be, i am guessing its the memory, thats why it would do that
