When I turn it on, it says there might be problem with the Hard Drive and tells me to press F-1.

After pressing F--1, Windows XP desktop comes up after like 5 min, but no icons. And it stays like that forever. Any advice of what to do, please?

You have some issues. You will very likely need to get a new drive, but you can try the following to get at your data.
Hit CTRL + ALT + DEL. If you get a process window of any kind, you can probably run explorer through the file menu. choose new.. process .. and type explorer in the window. If this doesn't work, you will need to get a new drive, but you may still be able to get your data back with a 2.5" ide to usb conversion cable or some such.

The S.M.A.R.T (self monitoring) on your hard drive is telling you the drive is going bad. That happens on boot up. Pressing F1 allows you to by pass the error.
Sounds like you ignored it too many times. Now your drive is dying. You will need a new drive. Hopefully you didn't loose anything too important.

Try copying your files to an external harddrive,(with a 'mirror' software like Acronis, or Norton Ghost[Hmmmmm], this one is 'shootin' craps'! Then replace the internal harddrive on your laptop, and copy files back over. Worst case scenario, you lose your files because your harddrive went belly up, and you lose your operating system,(like WinXP, or WinVista). Solution? New harddrive, new copy of Windows, or install Linux, like Ubuntu,(free)
