I also live by the plan If it ain't broke---don't fix it, but you my friend sound more and more with every question you ask that you your self may possibly be in bad need of repair.l Seems as if you need to stop the GAME in your head for a while and take a good reality check. I do know that if you were playing in my game this seriously, I would ask you not to return and your character would meet a terrible demise... Hope you can heed this message before it it to late, though I fear it may already be...

Fare Well and good luck in your quest...

They probably aren't capable to fix something that is broken. They probably are mentally exhausted, lazy, don't know where to start, don't understand what exactly the problem is, feel hopeless about it, etc. Which probably causes them to try to perfect something else to feel better about themselves, when all they've really accomplished is not much at all. It is easier to continue or work on something that has already been half done for you.

EDIT:

Ugh. I just realized I answered why do humans not fix something that is broken.

Humans (and please, my friend, stop asking these questions as though you're not one) don't "always" have to fix things; in my experience, we tend to want to fix things even when they're not broken because we believe they can be made smaller, faster, and/or better.

It's this constant urge to improve ourselves which, to use some elements of your worldview, elves, dwarves, and most mythical races tend to suppress. (Hence their dwelling in the realm of myth and not fact; they and any ungrowing culture die out and live on as legend because they let the world change them rather than they change the world.)

We're not as afraid of the pain of growth, physically, emotionally, or spiritually and fixing THINGS is ultimately about fixing ourselves, the purpose of all faiths, as I see them. We're afraid of remaining as we are; that's why we seek to produce art and science and literature, that's why we reproduce to create who and what will live beyond our mortal lifetimes. To fix is to improve, and our greatest improvement is on ourselves.

If it isn't broken, you can break it in a way that only you can fix and feel like a hero!

We have a natural tendency to try to improve things. I call this a desire for "home improvement." Many times in my career I have embarked on a project to make things better (in my view) and ended up making a worse mess of the situation.

"When will people learn to be happy with what they have?" LOL! Because that goes against the essence of the "Person"! In all seriousness, every single "We need..." statement you just listed there all have a common theme: "I" see something I don't want. "I" see something "I" don't have! "I" see something "I" find inconvenient! "I" see something I don't agree with! It all resolves that "I". We perceive that everything we see from our point of view is the truth, regardless of whether or not we know that we're delusional this way. The only way to stop this train wreck is to get rid of the "I". Good luck to 'ya on that one! LOL!

Well, I don't know about other people, but I live by the saying my Grandma told me, and that's" If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

The simple answer is that humans know that they can do better.
