The best thing initially is a very large absorbant towel. Then put on a clean pair of underwear, a heavy maxi and go to the hospital.
As a protective measure you can put a waterproof pad under your sheets.
Carry a towel in your car just in case, and a couple of heavy maxis in your purse, along with a change of underwear. If your water should break in public, go to the bathroom and get cleaned up and remain standing as long as you can. Less fluid comes out that way.
Ask for help getting to the hospital or call someone to drive you.
But only 10% of labors begin with waters breaking. And even then, it doesn't always gush out. Mine started with a trickle.
Also, even if your water breaks you might not feel contractions right away. Some women wait for hours or even days with no contractions.

An overnight maxi pad should be just fine. Dispite what the movies show, it is not common for a women to gush water like she emptied a bucket. What normally happens is a steady or slow stream. You will typically feel like you may have wet yourself. Some women dont even realize that their water had broken. Even if you do gush for some reason, dont worry about it. People will see that you are obviously pregnant and wont judge!!! :)

Only about 10% of women have their waters break before labor starts, and even then it's usually a trickle, not a Hollywood-style gush.
Put a plastic mattress protector on your bed if you're worried about it breaking at night and bring panty-liners in your purse wherever you go.
It doesn't usually break at night anyhow because the baby's head isn't pressing on the bag near your cervix, since you're lying down.

If your membranes rupture while you are sleeping, you will probably wake up and find everything wet. As for shopping well you can't stop it the only thing you can do is wear a pad just in case if you are that worried. Not all women have a huge gush of fluid, some only have a slight leak.

Well, my water sprang a leak prematurely one morning back in April and I leaked for 3 days prior to giving birth. I used a super-sized overnight sanitary pad for the trip to my OB's office, but if I was upright for long it would gush and it soaked through quickly.
When you water actually breaks -- not leaks, but breaks -- there's really not much you can do but grin and bear it. In my case, it felt very much like my bladder was leaking and I had no control over it whatsoever. I suppose if you're out and about, just carry some sanitary pads with you just in case.

well with myself, it was not a slow trickle. it totally depends on your body. when my water broke it was like a bottle of water fallin out of me. A really fast gush. so my adviece, you can try wearing a panty liner or over night pad, but when it comes down to it you still might make a mess.
also if this is your first pregnancy there is a very good chance that your water will not break on its own. goodluck

wear a panty liner. if your water breaks it will be more of a slow trickle and a little bit of fluid due to the baby's head acting like a cork that keeps water from coming out. If you are lying down, however, the fluid comes out alot and is more because the baby's head does not block it from the cervix. So unless you are going to be laying down, wear a panty liner
