i have a compaq presario r4000 with built in wireless but i dont know how or if i can still use it i. i dont know how to use Ubuntu so i dont know what im doing so can anyone help me with this

Right. You can thank Broadcom for that.
You are going to need to do some digging but there ARE ways of making it work.
You wireless card is the broadcom BCM4306. and you MAY be able to use the latest drivers from compaq coupled with ndiswrapper , but this one is tricky.

You should check the compatibility list for the wireless cards supported. Your existing one obviously is not.
