For a while I have been wanting to buy a motor scooter, and now that I have money saved up for one, I am going to do it. Problem is, I can't decide which brand.
I have been leaning toward a Vespa GTS 250.

Are there any other brands of scooters that I should consider, ones that are cheaper than Vespas, but made in a similar style. It needs to be at least a 125.
Thanks for all your help!

OK, here are some excellent manufactures of motor scooters that offer 125cc displacement and larger. The 'style' should be a secondary consideration behind the value (quality for the money) but alas, most folks just can't help themselves and go for what they like visually.

Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Suzuki, anything from these manufactures will be mechanically equal to or superior to Vespa. Also, the dealership networks are huge which means that you can get your scooter serviced almost anywhere, and at a lower cost.

Kymco, SYM, Daelim, TGB, Hyosung these are either Taiwan or South Korean manufactures. Their products are of very high quality, some say approaching the Japanese marks. Their scooters for similar models are roughly 30% below the Japanese brands.

There are hundreds of 'brands' being imported from mainland China, most of these are sold over the Internet and are very CHEAP. Some are of pretty good quality, but all of them are going to require their owners to have some fairly thorough mechanical skills as they do require a high degree of maintenance. Chinese scooters have a horrible reputation, and deserve it. These cheap vehicles are hyped and claimed to be high quality, and they simply are not. Buyers that KNOW WHAT they are getting and can work on them can turn them into pretty good scooters by replacing parts that are know to be bad from the factories. I suggest you avoid these like the plague!

Kymco has been making an outstanding scooter, and they should be considered. Kymco makes scooters from 50 to 500 ccs.

Another bike to consider that is excellent, and going cheap, is the Bajaj Chetak. They had their last run in 2006, but there are plenty of these bikes new for sale still, and At deep discounts. They are 150 ccs, and because they are manual shift, 150 is very good. 110MPG too! I have one of these bikes, and for being from India, the quality vs. price is outstanding!

All Vespas are great bikes. They have modernized their scooters very well, and they are fine machines. Another point is that they resell better than other scooters, a point to consider when trading in.

Scooters in general are great bikes to start riding on, as well as much more practical than a typical motorcycle. I forsee a surge of scooterists that will rival other bikers' numbers in the near future.

I used to have a 1963 Vespa, and I missed it very much! I bought the Bajaj to fill a void in my heart for the old Vespa, and it did the trick! It's performance is virtually the same, except that the fuel economy is much better!

KYMCO makes more scooter models than any other company. Has been making scooters since 1964. Are NOT Chinese junk. Are guaranteed for 2 years. Cost more than the Chinese scooters, less than the Japanese brands. Are top quality. I own two. Both Agility models, a 50 and a 125. The 125 is very quick. Both are 4 stroke. You should at least consider KYMCO. Vespa is outstanding but very pricey. Vespa is to scooters what Harley is to mtorcycles.

The first thing you must look at when you go to a dealer is their service department. Are the mechanics more than 25 years old? Are there more bikes waiting to be serviced than are for sale? Do they even have a service department?
A 250 is the minimum for highway use. My 110 will go 90 kph but only on the flat.
