Yes, in California we all must present our state Medi-Cal cards along with a matching & valid photo ID card OR Drivers license. As far as I know, it's been this way for the past 10 years in my state.
Identity Theft is a BIG BUSINESS these days.
It's a good thing to have this rule, as makes it more difficult for others to have access to your medical records OR use your name in order to get medical services & your entire chart would be a real mess of fictitious facts from an imposter!
The advisor at Social Security told me that in the event that a person must PROVE their identity, it is never a good idea to discuss your exact medical history with unknowns because that is the one thing that only YOU & your body will have as factual living proof of who you are! Broken bones, scars, diseases, etc all can be used to steal your identity by a pro. Beware & Be Safe!

I live in California. No, I haven't been asked for my drivers license at the doctors office. They do ask for my insurance card, but not every time, just the first time.
One time I went to have an xray and was asked what church I went to! I thought that was very strange. It's none of their business what church I do or do not attend. Have you ever heard of that before???

Part of it is identity theft, now something new has been going on, insurance theft. People go to a doctor and give them your name and insurance number, it used to be the doctors took it as fact but after being scammed so much they now want to see a photo id. Can't really blame them.

No I haven't, but I've had the same doctor for many years and they just ask if I have the same insurance. Which I did. Now that I am retired I have none. I just walk around with my fingers crossed hoping I don't get sick before I can get Medicare. Makes it difficult to do some chores without the full use of all my fingers.

I saw it on the news the other day that they were going to start doing that. What is going on is the insurance theft for one thing, plus there are a lot of people out there that owes money for doctor bills and what have you. And they are also checking to see if you have a warrant out for your arrest as will. They are checking to see if that prescription has been filled else where. There are also checking for illegal immigrants, and also making sure you are who you say you are. The information that you give them goes into their computer and it is scanned at that time. I can't remember what all it is that they are checking for, but it is a lot of stuff.

Have been asked for my drivers license a lot lately. I think that all credit and debit cards should have our picture on them. It could be done with insurance cards also and save a lot of that hassle.

Yes, it's supposed to help stop insurance fraud. Many people do not go to the Dr. very often and therefore could lose their insurance card! But presenting both - - - well that should cut down on cheating both Medicare and private insurance!

Each and every time I go to the Clinic where I receive my healthcare, they ask for Drivers License and Social Security Card.
This is not new where I go. Even if I went in once every hour, they would go throught the same procedure. Part of it is HIPPA, the confidentially program, the other is strictly identification.
