You wont be poor being a teacher. Teachers are paid decently, however they are paid low for the education required for it and the actual job.

My husband and I are both teachers and our house hold income is higher than the national average. We both work in fairly low paying districts in Missouri which is one of the states that pays teachers the least. I have been teaching for 2 years and he has been teaching for 5. We are both fairly new teachers.

Private schools actually pay less because they have less funding than public schools. the only reason private schools are presumed better education is because unlike public school, the large majority of students and parents at private schools see the value in education. Where as in public schools you have a vast variety of beliefs that may or may not support education. Most private schools do not even require certified teachers.

The Mrs. is right. You won't be poor if you teach (my husband and I are both teachers as well). Most private schools pay less than public schools and don't have the same insurance benefits. Sometimes when tuition gets bumped up, enrollment goes down. That's never a problem in public schools.

I'm in college for ECE which is a teacher up to 12 years of age.

There is good money in teaching depending where you live. In Canada I'm going to have a nice bank account being a teacher, in the states I'd be poor so I'll stay in my own country!

Just go to college, there are loans you can get, grants as well, a good education always pays for itself in the end when you have a good paying job.

A friend of mine just graduated, got her K-12 music cert, and landed her first job (not just teaching job - her first any job) and is starting as a brand new teacher with no experience at all making right under $50,000 in rural South Carolina.

She's making three times the average income in the area and 1.5 times the average family income all by her inexperienced self.

That's not "poor" in anyone's book.

Some of the highest paying teaching jobs are overseas. University instructors and professors in Japan, Hong Kong, and Dubai are very well paid. The websites below have a lot more information.

It depends on what you teach and where. My friend taught Special Ed in Richmond, VA while I taught smart 8th graders in Stafford, VA. She made twice as much as me because no one wanted her job.
Another option is to tutor. Once again it is supply and demand. If you know advanced math and live near a wealthy neighborhood, you can make $100 an hour tutoring.

I don't think teachers are poor. We have a home to live in, food on our table, clothes to wear, and a car to drive.
We may not live in mansions, or drive BMW's, but we are happy with what we do. We are fulfilled and blessed to touch the lives of young people.. and you can't beat the vacation time!
