My friend's brother is a college freshman majoring in education...and he has to observe at all levels of teaching. Knowing I am a high school teacher, he asked to observe me. I said yes, and I told my principal. I guess I should've asked first, because they are picky about visitors in the building. He said that normally the university contacts him....and it is handled administratively, that way they know without a doubt that it is legitimate.

My principal said that its ok...but just so I know in the future....that administrators coordinate that kind of thing.

Here's the kicker....the kid has been in some recent legal troubles (making threatening posts on myspace)....and he has long hair and tattoos.

I shouldn't judge....I used to change this kid's diapers....but I'm worried that my principal will now question my judgment....because he said it would be okay because I personally know this kid.

If you trust him enough, then let him continue. Maybe he's trying to get his life together and turn himself around. I wouldn't mention the MySpace thing to anyone. If the administrators don't mention it, then don't worry. If they do, then plead ignorance. You didn't know. You should talk with him though and impart some knowledge about how a teacher should be. Let him know that a teacher is considered an example to the kids that he will be teaching and that he will be expected to be a good one for them. It's not only what he knows, but how he acts and how he appears to them that will also be what the school board will be looking at when he applies to become an educator. Let him think upon that and perhaps he'll make some changes himself.

That's a real concern because you're opening the school up to potential liability in the event of some questionable behavior on his part. It may be wiser to postpone the observation in deferrence to going through appropriate channels. Barring that action, at least inform your principal of everything you know so that he is not blindsided by this new revelation. That will protect you professionally, as well.

Don't call it off, but tell the guy to do a tail-n-tuck with his hair, and keep his tats covered by clothing. If he has facial piercings, he should remove them.

He SHOULD understand these requests- after all, YOUR rep is on the line too.

Maybe he will get bored and stop coming. Don't give him too much attention and help; otherwise he may stay forever.
