All first class letters in the U.S. require 41¢ postage. It doesn't matter if the letter is going across town or across the country. Below is a link to a postage calculator. If you are sending a package, or anything other than a regular letter this link will help you estimate the cost.

Dear Barclark,

The simple answer is 3. But, there's a bit more. If you're mailing a letter anywhere within the U.S. or to a Fleet Post Office (military address) you need 41 cents in postage. 41 cents divided by 17 cents gives you 34 cents, or 2.4 of the postage needed to mail your letter. Therefore an extra 17 cent stamp would be needed to mail a first class letter using only 17 cent stamps.

three--first class postage for an average letter is now 41 cents. So to cover that, you'll need three stamps.

If those are the only stamps you have you better use 3 or it will come back to you, or arrive postage due.embarassing.
